The Birth of Full Death Roguelike

How it started:

 How it's going:

My name is Nate O'Connor, and I am the creator, lead artist, writer, main programmer, and community manager of Full Death Roguelike (FDRL).

Today, I'm excited to share with you the backstory and vision behind FDRL Join me as we explore the motivations and aspirations that drive this project forward.

After immersing myself in popular roguelike games such as Caves of Qud, ADOM, DCSS, and TOME, I stumbled upon a Python Arcade roguelike implementation. Given my prior experience with Python Arcade from my unfinished game projects, I saw an opportunity to create my own roguelike.

FDRL was
originally conceived as a homage to Half-Life, but the game's scope expanded to encompass a broader setting, offering players a diverse range of adventures and experiences. It is set in a science fantasy universe, drawing inspiration from my previous world-building efforts in Hated Space and my fondness for the genre.

FDRL separates itself from traditional roguelike conventions in several ways...

It focuses on strategic mechanics, eliminating features like food, water, and currency mechanics.

It has shorter play-through times, providing fast-paced and immersive experiences.

FDRL does away with health and mana regeneration, presenting players with challenges that require careful planning and strategic decision-making.

Character creation is replaced by a system where all abilities are tied to items within the game world, offering a unique approach to character progression.

One of FDRL's defining features is its Manifestations system, inspired by TOME's Prodigies, which allows players to unlock powerful abilities that transcend traditional skill sets.

As we embark on this creative journey...

I invite you to join me in shaping the world of FDRL. Your feedback and collaboration are invaluable as we work towards crafting a game that resonates with players.

Follow along with my blog series, share your thoughts and ideas, and together, let's create a game that pushes the boundaries of imagination.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure. Stay tuned for more updates on Full Death Roguelike!
